Plan, Act, Learn, & Act

Even though persistence is one of the main attributes of successful people, there are some things you can do to work smarter instead of harder. I’ve talked about having a purpose and a desire although you still need to have a definite goals to reach for. You then have to develop a plan to achieve those goals. Benjamin Franklin said, “By failing to prepare you are preparing to fail.” One of the best lessons I learned early in my career is to take time on Sunday night to plan your week and then invest 10-15 minutes every morning deciding what needs to be accomplished that day. Make sure you spend time doing the things that will get you to your goal.

An example in my insurance business is finding and working on referrals and potential new clients so I have a flow of new revenue. In my marketing company, the number 1 thing to be doing each day is simply sharing the opportunity with other people. I know that if I simply do that, learn from each situation, then do it again, that I will reach my goals and be very successful.

Another part of the success formula besides planning is to get into action. Conrad Hilton said, “Success seems to be connected with action. Successful people keep moving.” We can do all the planning in the world but without action, nothing happens. Action always involves risk but that’s good because nothing worth achieving  comes without risk. With risk comes mistakes, but that is good also because mistakes allow us to learn and improve. Mistakes and tough times will test our character. There will come a time in each of our lives where giving up is easier than going on. These are defining moments. They will either define you as a quitter or an achiever. Nothing worth having in life comes easily. There is a fine line that separates failure from success. People that are successful just don’t give up on themselves.

If you really want to achieve your dreams, you have to just get into action and fail. Fail early and fail often, but just keep going. Failures are simply stepping stones on the path to success. Every time you plan, risk, fail, learn, and act, you have a better chance of succeeding the next time.  So just go for it.

Have an awesome day.
