“Remember that failure is an event, not a person.“–Zig Ziglar
We have all heard and read many stories about achievers and successful people that have learned to overcome failure and the fear of failure. There have also been many people who haven’t been able to overcome the fear of failure. The difference is most of these people you never hear about. It’s simply because they allow failure to get the better of them emotionally and it stops them from ever achieving their dreams. Everyone is going to fail and failure can be painful. One of the most important steps in getting through our failures is learning not to personalize it. Just because you fail doesn’t make you a failure.
We have a saying in our business that “Doubt will take you out of action and action will take you out of doubt.” I believe that fear will also take you out of action. The fear of rejection leads to inaction. This then becomes a vicious cycle because when you don’t act, you don’t gain the learning experience of that situation, and how to overcome future obstacles. An example of this might be making a call to a prospect to share a business opportunity and having them throw up a roadblock that wasn’t anticipated. If I wasn’t able to have an adequate response, I won’t be able to move forward with the prospect. Even though that is a failure, if I learn from it so the next time I’ll have the proper response, then I’ve learned how to overcome that obstacle. If I don’t make that call because of a fear of rejection or failure, I’ll never learn how to get past that obstacle.
Everyday, we all have a choice. Are we going to live with a fear of failure, or are we going to get into action and learn from our failures? The only way we will ever accomplish our dreams is to throw caution to the wind and to have a drive for success that is greater than our fear of failure. Don’t personalize your failures and don’t let the fear of failure get in the way of achieving your dreams. You can do it.
“In order to succeed, your desire for success should be greater than your fear of failure.”–Bill Cosby
