Over this past week, I’ve talked about different ways to learn. We can learn through study, learn by doing, but still one of the best ways to learn is through modeling. By having a coach or mentor that you can learn from and model, you will cut your learning curve dramatically. It’s been said you can define a person by the heroes he or she keeps. Who are your heroes? Who are you modeling yourself after? The key to accelerated growth and mastery is finding people who’ve done what you want to do and surround yourself with them.
You heard it said that “Birds of a feather flock together”, “You’re a reflection of those around you”, and “Your a product of your environment”. All of these sayings are telling us we have to be careful who we hang with or associate with. If we associate with negative people, it will be very difficult to succeed at having and maintaining a positive approach to life. If we are hanging out with people who are resistant to change and not willing to grow, it will become very difficult for us to change and grow.
You’ve probably heard it said, “Your income tends to equal the average of the incomes of your five best friends.” This not only applies to our finances but also to every aspect of our lives. Think about that for a minute. Our attitudes, financial status, health, and everything else will tend to be very close to the average level of your five closet friends in each of these areas of our lives. Every relationship you have is either empowering you or it’s not. Look at the people around you. Are they people who live the kinds of lives you aspire to live, or the kind of lives you hope to leave behind?
I am not suggesting you disassociate with your family of friends that don’t empower you. We certainly don’t want to cut off these relationships but who we spend our time with takes careful thought and discernment. You just need to ask yourself whether these relationships are empowering you and helping to support your purpose and helping you to realize your dreams. It does make a difference.
