Power of Habit

There are good habits, bad habits, annoying habits, and odd habits that we all have. We know they exist but seldom realize the power they have in our lives. In reality, you can break habits down to those that serve you and those that don’t.

A habit is something you do without even thinking about it. Getting up early can become a habit. So can complaining. Looking at challenges positively can become a habit, so can looking at them in a negative manner.

A behavior turns into a habit by repeating it over and over again until it becomes automatic. I’ve heard it said that it only takes 21 days to build or change a habit. The compounding effect of these simple little behaviors or actions over time will either work for you or against you, depending on whether your habits serve you or not.

“The individual who wants to reach the top in business must appreciate the might of the force of habit-and must understand that practices are what create habits. He must be quick to break those habits that can break him-and hasten to adopt those practices that will become the habits that can help him achieve the success he desires”. – J. Paul Getty

Your habits come from your daily activities and your activities are the result of the choices you make every moment. The key is making the right choices.

Often times, we are not even aware of our habits. By bringing a habit into our conscious awareness, we can determine whether it is a habit that serves us or not. If it doesn’t serve us, how do we get rid or change the habit?

Many of you have read or heard about “The Secret” or the “Law of Attraction”. It states that what we focus on grows. That’s why we have to be careful not to focus on what we don’t want, the bad habit, but instead focus on what we do want, the good habit.

The best way to get rid of an unwanted habit is to replace it with another habit that you do want. This is not always easy but if you take it in small daily steps, you will create habits that support and serve you and move you along the success curve.

My challenge today is to become consciously aware of your habits. Replace the ones that don’t serve you with ones that do.

Have an awesome day and be successful.
